I grew visiting family in Teeside and we would almost always visit Redcar or Saltburn, so Cleveland almost feels like a second home. We had a lovely long escape here a few years ago, to escape neighbours renovating, and we got to see Saltburn-By-The-Sea in lots of different times of the day, and with this print I wanted to depict one of those evening walks along the coast and that fading light. I’m always drawn to a pier and the structure as well as the shadows it creates on the water. Saltburn’s pier is actually the last remaining one in the North East and Yorkshire Coast, it’s also Grade II listed…but may be most importantly it’s where the arcades are and where you watch some of the amazing surfing that goes on at this beach. A short drive from Skipton it’s a popular location for climbing and bird watchers looking out for the nesting Peregrine Falcons, house martins and jackdaws that call it home. The rock formation which dominates the landscape was formed by glaciers melting and further by huge floods of water, over millions of years. It would have also been a huge waterfall back when the ground was frozen the river ran over ground. This prominent landmark of the Calder Valley in West Yorkshire, listed Grade II in 1984, is located near Mankinholes and Lumbutts it was constructed in 1856 at the end of the Crimean War. It’s also one of the locations you pass walking the Pennine Way, sitting high on the moorlands on Langfield Common. When I was a kid this place was a very different village, there was no train station (although that changed quickly) and the shops were very much for people who lived here like your newsagents, bookshops, toyshop and sweetshops but this was also before it became a UNESCO World Heritage site as one of the first model villages to built, by it’s founder Titus Salt who named it after himself and it’s position on the River Aire. Over the years it’s become an increasingly popular place to live, visit and even holiday and I think sometime it’s over looked that it’s still a place where people live with a strong community. I love the contrast of this landscape with it’s green meadows with their old limestone barns and walls, with the moorlands and how the narrow Swaledale valley curves it’s way into the distance. It’s also a favourite location for climbing and bouldering, but also such a good example of a tor and it’s a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It’s situation in-between Staithes and Saltburn-By-The-Sea is actually how we came to visit the beach that day. During the pandemic Staithes was just so busy we went to Skinningrove on our way to Saltburn-By-The-Sea, it’s more of a working village, but the beach is quite a different prospect to it’s more well known neighbours. Located in the heart of the North York Moors coastline I’m often drawn to Staithes, may be it’s because of family history with the area and participating in the Staithes Festival of Art and Heritage, which is treated like a holiday. On any visit I always try to pop into the Cod and Lobster, or if the weather is good enough I’ll sit looking out onto the harbour. The pub is actually in it’s forth carnation after previously being washed away three times, the last time was in 1953. I was very grateful to see the natural orange tint to the grass that I’d been looking for right next to the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct, perfect for the Yorkshire Parkin flavour of this beer. I also loved the remaining snow on the top of Whernside and I used a lot of overlapping colours to achieve the variety of colours to get a great sense of depth and scale of this wonderful place. This ruined farmhouse too has it’s links to the Brontes and was supposed to be the inspiration behind Emily Bronte’s novel, Wuthering Heights where it was home to Cathy Earnshaw but it’s thought this is more for it’s dramatic location rather than the house itself. The location is stunning too, it’s somewhere I like to visit in all seasons and see how the landscape changes, which I like to reflect that in how I depict it in my screen prints. If you’re ever in the Bradford area and want a little walk, or you can make it a big one if you want to include Bronte Waterfall, I would recommend it…it’s not difficult but I just love how the house emerges and is framed in the moorland around it. Another subject I love to revisit as there’s just so many views, I can even see it from my Rawdon studio…if I stand on my tip toes! Emley Moor Mast is located in Kirklees and is the tallest free standing structure in the UK and 20m taller than the shard (that’s got to be one of my favourite facts). This view is from the south of Huddersfield near Skelmanthorpe and Scissett, not far from Denby Dale where my partner’s family is from. Having a little venture out in the county of Derbyshire with this landscape, Mam Tor the name means “mother hill” (also know as Shivering Mountain) because of the landslides on the eastern face having resulted in so called mini hills below. It’s location means is sits on the edge of Dark Peak (gritstone) and White Peak (limestone) giving great views of places such as Winnats Pass and is also the official start of the Pennine Way. You’ll often see people paragliding around the hill top here. So after a callout and was put in touch with a friend's boss, Mark, who was a superstar and who took a few sets of photos for me after giving him an idea of what I was looking for. I think he did three trips out for me as part of his allocated daily exercise to capture the images I was after. This makes this the first print where I have not gone out to do the research (apart from travelling through Google Images, Instagram and Streetview...which I intensely studied) or the photography myself. I had an idea that with this landscape I wanted something to reflect a typical British seaside resort and as the flavour of this beer was ice cream this view seemed perfect. For the eagle eyed amongst you may have also spotted that this is first time I've included text and people (socially distanced of course) in a print. I also wanted to feature the lighthouse as another feature that makes this artwork more placeable as Scarborough. I even tried a deep fried Mars bar, the inspiration for the flavour of the beer this artwork was for. After a couple of days of walking around to find a view I realised it’s a tricky place to capture without altering the reality of the place and personally I like to represent what’s there. I had initially ruled out Edinburgh castle as it felt a bit too obvious, but I’ve also always been fascinated by its construction and geology (if you’ve not seen my work, I like rocks). This particular view is one I loved as a kid, it’s from a hotel we used to stay at on the Grassmarket and luckily I was allowed to go up, even climbing out of a window, to get the perfect view. The feature consists of an outcrop of millstone grit and a boulder sitting close to it, which is the reason behind the name Cow and Calf. This name has proven a little confusing to those who don’t know it so well, spending quite some time trying to find the cows in the print. One of the local legends is that the calf was split from the rocks when the giant Rombald (as in Rombald Moor) was fleeing an enemy, his angry wife, and he stamped on the rock as he jumped across the valley. She was said to have dropped stones from her skirt and created The Skirtful of Stones This is also a favourite spot amongst West Yorkshire climbers and boulderers, but there’s also amazing views across the landscape of the Wharfe Valley. I went to school not so far away from Ilkley and a lot of my friends were from the area so it’s become one of my personal favourites, along with exploring the moorland above. Salts mill itself sits in the Aire Valley on the Leeds Liverpool Canal and was one of the first Victorian model villages, created by Titus Salt (and the reason behind the name). The village became a UNESCO Heritage Site in 2001, as Salt had created a self contained place as wanted his workers to live in better conditions than in the city, so along with house he built a school, library, concert hall, almshouses, park and boat house amongst other things. The mill ceased production in 1986 and became a gallery housing a collection of David Hockney’s work, somewhere I have grown up visiting and admiring the artworks. There’s lots of history to this hilltop landmark going back to the Bronze Age but this grade II listed building also known as Victoria Tower or Jubilee Tower as it was built to celebrate the monarch. Situated in the Derbyshire Dales, south of Matlock it first developed as a spa town and is still very much a tourist destination to this day. The steep sides of the valley means that building is restricted to one side whilst facing the sheer cliffs of Giddy Edge and High Tor, they’re linked together by cable cars from the Heights of Abraham. Situated on a hillside in the North York Moors National Park in North Yorkshire it can been seen for miles around, as far as North Leeds and across the Vale of York. It’s said the origins of horse is that is was made by a schoolmaster and his pupils in 1857. The North Yorkshire coast was historically crucial to the importing of coal and export alum and the Whitby was the only natural harbour between the Tees and Humber. The abbey is such a well known and loved landmark it’s gothic appearance and links to Bram Stoker’s Dracula has even inspired the events of the town. It’s the oldest working tram of it’s type Europe, a narrow-gauge funicular with a little red car and a blue one. It was built in 1895 to make extra money from the mill workers from the Bradford who didn’t want to walk up the the hill to the glen’s Pleasure Grounds, a fairground at the top. The fair was opened in 1879 and was somewhere I went as a child but sadly closed in 2005. The heather near the hut on this particular walk had turned black from the controlled burning the heather that had taken place and really contrasted with the stones, water and moorland.
