Screen Prints

  • A screen print, also referred to as a silk screen print (most mesh is now polyester) or serigraphy, is a method of printmaking where ink is pulled through a mesh, stretched over a frame, using a squeegee. This creates a thin layer of ink on the chosen media, which could be paper, fabric, wood, glass or anything else you might want to try.

You can create designs by painting directly on to the screen to create a mono-print but more often it’s used with a stencil to print an edition or multiples. There are a few ways to create a stencil, with paper, using screen block or the photo emulsion process…which is what I use.

In most circumstances each colour is printed separately and matched up to the next. This can be done in a very loose way or using a very strict registration with a vacuum screen printing bed to hold the screen and paper in place for accuracy.

  • My prints only come in one size as they all start with a drawing and to retain the quality of linework I print the same size.

If I was to increase the size the lines would become thicker, if reduced in size some of the fine lines would disappear in transferring the image to a screen.

As I do like to revisit locations with a fresh take on the landscape I will try to do the next print in a completely different size.

  • This isn’t something I have done as of yet, but never say never. One point is though is I don’t consider the drawing to be the original but a foundation to create a screen print. The drawing is incomplete and the linework is created to create something through the process that will in fact change from the the black and white image.

  • Generally no, used to do this sometimes in the start of my career as a printmaker when I did smaller editions. I have not done this for a long time, I may revisit the subject in a new way so please do look out for my latest work.

If a print is sold out in my shop there may still be a chance to pick one up. Sometimes the odd print may still be around at a stockist or I may have a framed one so please do feel free to ask here.

  • Back soon means just that, it’s to highlight that the screen print is not Sold Out but I need to finish printing the rest of the edition.

Since being diagnosed with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder I don’t always print all the edition at the same time as I need to take breaks to protect my joints.

  • Yes, I usually have some in stock. I do prefer these are collected but please do get in touch if you are interested in a framed piece.

My frames are made professionally by a local framer in a hardwood moulding with a black finish, however I can order different mouldings for bespoke orders.

If i don’t have it in stock frame orders can take about two weeks to come back but do get in touch if you need it earlier and I can enquire.

  • Please handle with clean hands.

    Store in a dry place.

As with all artwork it is recommended that prints should not be displayed in direct sunlight.

When framing keep the paper away from the glass, for example with a mount, this will help protect the print.

If sticking or mounting use acid-free tape and mount board.

  • It’s very rare that I will take on commissions as I usually have a busy schedule with my other work.

  • Please do get in contact with me about any wholesale orders here.
